Choosing the Perfect Wool Coat

As we all know, a wool coat is a must-have item in any wardrobe. Not only is it a practical and functional piece of clothing that will keep you warm during the colder months, but it is also a stylish and timeless item that can be worn for years to come. With so many different styles, cuts, and colors to choose from, it can be overwhelming to find the perfect wool coat. Today, we will explore the history of wool coats, the different types of wool, and the top fashion brands that have launched the trend.

The History of Wool Coats

Wool coats have been worn for centuries, dating back to the Middle Ages. They were originally worn by the upper class and were made from high-quality wool, such as merino wool. The coats were often lined with fur or silk, and were decorated with intricate embroidery. During the 19th century, wool coats became more widely available to the masses, and were worn by both men and women. The iconic trench coat, which was first worn by soldiers during World War I, also became popular during this time.

Today, wool coats are still a popular choice. They are available in a wide range of styles, from classic and timeless to trendy and modern, and easily accessible from high street to luxury brands.

Types of Wool

It's important to consider the type of wool. The most common types of wool used in coats are merino, cashmere, and alpaca.

Merino wool is a high-quality wool that is soft, lightweight, and breathable. It is often used in high-end wool coats, as it is considered to be the finest wool available. Luckily this is also found in high street brands, which makes it an affordable luxury.

Cashmere wool is known for its softness and warmth. It is often used in luxury wool coats, as it is considered to be a high-end fabric.

Alpaca wool is a luxury wool that is known for its softness and warmth. It is hypoallergenic, making it a great option for people with sensitive skin.

Top Fashion Brands

When it comes to wool coats, there are a number of top fashion brands that have launched the trend. Some of the most popular brands include Burberry and Max Mara.

Burberry, is the luxury fashion brand that is known for its iconic trench coats. The brand has been creating high-quality wool coats for over 150 years, and their coats are considered to be some of the best in the world.

Max Mara is an Italian luxury fashion brand founded in 1951 by Achille Maramotti and is known for producing high-quality, classic and timeless clothing, particularly coats and outerwear. The brand has a strong reputation for tailoring and craftsmanship, which is what makes its beautiful coats such a good investment piece.

A “newer player” to the market and the one I opted for when choosing my wool coat investment piece is Jacquemus. Jacquemus is a French fashion brand that was founded by Simon Porte Jacquemus in 2009. The brand quickly gained attention for its unique and avant-garde designs, which have become synonymous with the Jacquemus aesthetic. The brand's clothing range is known for its minimalistic and modern designs, and its use of high-quality fabrics and materials.

What attracted me to the coat was the brand's designs of clean lines and simple shapes, but with a twist. The minimalist aesthetic is evident in the brand's signature pieces, such as this gorgeous coat. The brand's garments often feature unusual cuts and silhouettes, which are designed to push the boundaries of traditional fashion.

When it comes to choosing the perfect wool coat, there are a number of factors to consider. Ones I think are worth keeping in mind are the different types of wool, the cut and fit, the design and the brand you choose to invest in.

Which brand would you invest in?
