What's the worst thing that can happen to a foodie? Of course, except diseases. To find out it has food allergies or intolerances. At the end of April, after receiving some not so good blood analysis, I decided to investigate what was causing them. This led to finding out I have 12 food intolerances and I needed to be on a diet for two months while taking some homeopathic medicine.
Of course I put it off until exactly one month ago. I didn't want to be on a restrictive diet while on holiday, but did exercise some moderation and cut a few things out completely. However I wanted to hold the diet in summer because of the abundance of fresh fruit.
Here is a list of everything I'm intolerant to:
- Milk
- Soft cheese (I'm aloud to eat aged cheese and mozzarella)
- Butter
- Soy (this really hurt, because I was already replacing a lot of dairy products with soy products)
- Wheat ( If you know me, you know I love bread so this was devastating. However I'm not allergic to gluten so yay for that)
- Tea ( I almost cried for this, I have drunk green tea daily for the last 6 years at least)
- Coffee ( this was also pretty bad, but not as bad as tea)
- Honey (why?)
- Sugar of any kind ( Do you know how hard it is to avoid sugar? It's in everything)
- Cacao ( again, why???)
- Alcohol
- Legumes (beans, chickpeas, peas, etc.)
You can imagine that before starting this diet, I ate like a cow everything that wasn't permitted anymore. However, like I mentioned, there were a few things I excluded almost immediately and those were : tea, coffee, honey and legumes. I don't drink milk, but ate a lot of ice cream.
It all sounds pretty dramatic, but it isn't really. Because I'm not allergic to gluten, I was able to eat a lot of spelt pasta, quinoa and rice, which I already ate. I'm going to share today what I've been eating.
Green juice.
Spelt pasta al forno.
Watermelon.
Sushi, sashimi and tartare without the soy sauce. The rice has a bit of sugar in it, so it's like cheating a bit.
Prawns salad and black rice with prawns, avocado, goji berries.
Frozen yogurt with raspberries. This is cheating a bit because it has some sugar.
Rye toast with avocado, scrambled eggs with spinach and a side of tomatoes.
Bresaola, prosciutto and cheese platter with tomatoes.
Burger in lettuce.
Gyros without the bread.
Yogurt with fruit, pistachios avoiding the chocolate.
Mixed greens salad with red onion, tomatoes, avocado, feta and tuna.
Rye bread with avocado, eggs and feta.
Nodini with tomatoes.
Grilled veggies and meat with salad and chips.
Spelt piadina with avocado, scrambled eggs and smoked salmon.
Spelt caserecce with pesto.
Roasted chicken and potatoes.
Cabbage salad with roasted chicken, tomatoes and avocado.
Spelt Lasagna .
I'd try it all... most of the dishes! especially those with pesto **

Wow, that's a long list! I should really do a similar test because I'm pretty sure that I'm eating things that I shouldn't. I bet that dairy would be one of them as well :(
ReplyDeleteLUXESSED
Sadly dairy is the most common, which sucks because cheese and ice cream are so tasty. Hope you won't have any intolerances!
DeleteSo many things on that list! :( but the food looks so good!

oh my goodness what happens when you eat anything on your list? I think some things everyone would be intolerant too (alcohol) like its not good for anything or anyone. I am lactose intolerant, found out about a month ago now... really dislike talking about it (or sticking to no milk) but I am trying.. it sucks :(

Nothing awful, mostly just bloating and discomfort. They are just intolerances, so even if I keep eating them nothing truly harmful will happen. However the doctor recommended the diet in order to give my organs a break.
DeleteSorry to hear you're lactose intolerant! It does suck, but there are so many delicious alternatives these days which make it a bit easier.
OMG... love everything about this post! So delicious!

It's always interesting to see what other people enjoy eating, though even more so in this case due to your food intolerances - I've had the same thing! Although I'm now able to eat various of the foods I used to (combined with taking various tablets to help keep problems at bay), I've had chronic hives for about four/five years now; so I can 100% relate to awkward food allergies! You've experimented with some delicious dishes, many of these meals look super tasty :) I hope you find yourself able to return to your fave foods soon!

I have food intolerances & also allergies as well. I basically need to eat Paleo diet b/c I'm allergic to everything else. Be careful b/c overtime I noticed I was developing auto-immune diseases/inflammatory from the foods I was eating. Sucks, but hopefully cravings stop after you avoid certain foods. Best of luck! xo

It's so fascinating how all our systems are each so different right?! I basically avoid dairy as much as I can (and am vegetarian most of the time), but even both of those can be difficult (especially in family gatherings). Props to you for being able to manage all of your dietary restrictions so well :) That all looks so yummy!
